Using the awesome graphical capabilities of the Quake III engine, Raven succeeded in creating a most realistic representation of the Star Trek universe.
In this first computer game ever based on the Star Trek Voyager universe, you play a member of the Hazard Team, being the only one who can save the crew and the ship.
Elite Force is a first-person shooter similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake III (it even uses Quake's engine!). In many FPS's (what first-person shooters are commonly known as), you play directly through the main character's eyes, seeing what they see. Destruction of enemies is first and foremost; in Elite Force, this is true, but not of prime importance. It consists of shooting the enemies and walking through levels, with the occasional boss fight. They usually are individual endeavors; Elite Force is completely different. As a member of a team, you'll work together. Team members aren't going to be as good as a real-life person playing alongside you, but they still put in a few shots and stay out of the way. You'll also have to utilize your discretion; it's often possible to sneak by enemies and avoid confrontation. It's not anything like, say, Metal Gear Solid or Thief 2, but that strategy is still quite useful. Also, completing mission objectives (such as freeing your imprisoned teammates) is much more important than enemy destruction. The final main difference is the use of terminals for ammo and health, instead of finding medpacks and ammo boxes, you'll have to use these, usually stationed on the walls, to regenerate. A nice feature is that they don't give you it all in one usage if it's not needed, so that you can use them once, and come back for more if need be (they do run out eventually, though).
